KEY POINTS
- Create a makerspace.
- Invest in digital devices and digital content.
- Turn your library into an effective research hub.
As technology becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives, libraries equipped with only endless rows of books are becoming a thing of the past. Now, school libraries are becoming the go-to place for computer science, interactive technology, STEM resources, and digital content. However, with so many options available, it can be difficult to find the best options for your library.
INTRODUCE MAKING
Creating a makerspace is one of the best ways to take your school library to the next level. The first step is determining what kind of resources you would like to include in your library. Computers, robotic arms, 3D printers, laser printers, and circuit-building components are just a few examples. Next, it is important to allocate enough space in your library to set up your makerspace. Be sure that you have enough tablespace and electrical outlets to make your setup a success. Providing students with the opportunity to interact with hands-on technology will surely spark student innovation and creativity and will truly bring your library to life!
INVEST IN DIGITAL MATERIAL
Physical books will always have a place in a library, but providing students with digital alternatives, like Kindles or iPads, comes with many advantages. Devices like these allow students to learn using a wide range of interactive media that foster imagination and creativity. Digital devices also allow multiple students to check out the same book at one time. They additionally grant you the ability to save the precious space in your library that physical books would otherwise occupy. Be sure to invest in digital content like apps and ebooks as well to keep your students learning on their digital devices.
CREATING A RESEARCH HUB
Perhaps the most important aspect of any thriving library is creating a welcoming and interesting environment that encourages students to utilize library resources and spend more time there. Availability of computers with updated software and reliable internet access is key to maximizing the utility of your space. Comfortable furniture, like ergonomic tables and chairs, is also important. The more comfortable and engaging your library becomes, the more students will utilize the space for learning, studying, and researching for projects and papers.
