How to Build a STEM Summer Camp with Robots (No Experience Needed)
May 6, 2025Summer’s calling, and it’s the perfect time to turn up the creativity! Whether you’re running a library program, leading a local club, or dreaming up a full-fledged STEM camp, hands-on learning can make this summer unforgettable.
Need a spark to get started?
Here are a few easy-to-launch ideas you can mix, match, or remix to fit your space, your budget, and your campers.
1. Robot Races and Code Challenges
Set up coding obstacle courses using robots like Dobot, Wonder Workshop’s Dash, Ozobot, Kaitbot, or any programmable bots you have on hand. Kids can code their way through mazes, races, and even themed challenges, such as “Escape the Volcano!” No robots? No problem. Try unplugged coding games using logic and teamwork!
2. 3D Printing: From Dream to Design
Introduce campers to beginner-friendly printing tools like MakerBot and 3Doodler, and let their imaginations take the wheel. Start with simple projects (like keychains or nameplates), then challenge them to design solutions to real-world problems. This could mean a superhero gadget, a new kind of playground, a Mars rover, you name it!
3. STEM + Art = STEAM-tastic Creations
Mix in the arts and you’ll be amazed at what students create. Build sculptures that light up with simple circuits, design custom stickers with vinyl cutters, or use microcontrollers to bring interactive art pieces to life. Bonus: this draws in kids who might not think they’re “science kids” … yet!
Brown Dog Gadgets is a provider who knows exactly how to blend art into the STEM equation. With engaging projects like solar bugs and paper circuits, students learn real-world STEM concepts while building fun, expressive creations. Whether it’s a bug that moves with sunlight or a greeting card that lights up, these projects make room for imagination in every lesson!
4. Inventor’s Workshop
Challenge campers to invent something new each day using a mystery bag of supplies (Think popsicle sticks, batteries, balloons, motors, foil, etc.). End the week with a “STEM Showcase” where campers present their wackiest, coolest, most brilliant creations.
Ready to Build Your Summer Camp Plan?
You don’t need a huge budget or fancy tech to make magic happen. All it takes is curiosity, creativity, and a space where kids feel free to explore.
