What role does STEM play in career connections for students?
February 13, 2026There’s a version of me, a little girl who would have needed this.
She loved learning. She asked questions. She was curious about how things worked and why systems existed the way they did. And she was told, more than once, that she would never be smart enough to be anything.
Not a leader.
Not a thinker.
Not someone whose ideas mattered.
That kind of message doesn’t fade quietly. It settles in. It shapes how you see yourself and what you believe you’re allowed to want.
So when I walked into my first WNBA game last year, I didn’t expect it to be emotional. I thought I was just going to watch basketball. Instead, I felt something I had never truly felt at a sporting event before.
I felt seen.
The Moment Everything Changed
The energy in the arena was different. The women on the court weren’t apologizing for their strength or confidence. They weren’t shrinking themselves to be easier to accept.
They were leading.
That night, I became completely obsessed with the Las Vegas Aces, especially A’ja Wilson. Watching her play wasn’t just about talent; it was about presence. Authority. Excellence without permission.
As A’ja Wilson said, “I’m going to continue to be who I am.”
That sentence alone would have meant everything to the little girl I used to be; the one who was told to be quieter, smaller, and less curious. Seeing a woman take up space so fully and unapologetically cracked something open in me.
Why the WNBA Is Bigger Than Basketball
The WNBA isn’t just a league. It’s a declaration.
It shows girls what it looks like when women:
- Trust their instincts
- Speak up for what they believe in
- Lead without asking permission
- Excel in spaces that weren’t built with them in mind
Those same qualities sit at the heart of STEM.
Behind every WNBA game is a foundation of science, technology, engineering, and math; from performance analytics and biomechanics to data systems that track movement, health, and strategy. STEM quietly powers the game, helping players stay healthy, guiding coaches to make informed decisions, and helping the league continue to grow.
Women aren’t just playing the game. They’re shaping how it evolves.
Why This Connects So Deeply to STEM Education Works
This is why the work we do at STEM Education Works matters so deeply to me.
At its core, STEM Education Works is about access and possibility. It’s about ensuring students who have been underestimated are given opportunities to explore, question, and lead. It’s about making sure curiosity is nurtured instead of dismissed.
The WNBA shows us what happens when women are trusted to lead at the highest level. STEM Education Works exists to help build that trust earlier in classrooms, programs, and learning spaces where students are still figuring out who they can become.
Because no child should grow up believing their future has already been decided for them.
Representation Isn’t a Bonus; It’s Essential

When girls see women like A’ja Wilson dominating the court, speaking with confidence, and standing firmly in who they are, they learn something powerful:
I don’t have to choose between being smart and being strong.
I don’t have to choose between curiosity and confidence.
For girls who have been told they’re “not enough” – not smart enough, not capable enough – that representation can be life-changing. It shows them that leadership, intelligence, and excellence come in many forms.
Sometimes, it even helps us rewrite the stories we were handed as children.
Why Women’s History Month Matters Here
Women’s History Month isn’t just about honoring the past. It’s about recognizing the spaces shaping girls’ futures right now.
The WNBA is one of those spaces.
It creates visibility. It builds confidence. It proves what’s possible when women are trusted to lead; in sports, in STEM, and in life.
And I can’t help but wonder how different things might have felt if I had seen this sooner.
This game gave me more than entertainment. It gave me belonging.
And that is something every girl deserves..
