St. Simon the Apostle School

St. Simon the Apostle School in Indianapolis wanted to expand into computer science and hands-on STEM. They needed an all-in-one program that was easy to implement, engaging for students, and realistic for busy classrooms. Through a partnership with Purdue IN-MaC and STEM Education Works, St. Simon launched a new Design and Innovation Studio in January 2026.

Taking a great science program to the next level.

The school had the space, staff, and a computer science teacher with a software engineering background. STEM Education Works provided curriculum, technology, and support. Within three months, the studio was fully operational, and students were learning. “We were teaching in January, and the kids are so excited about it,” Paula Pletcher, the school’s media specialist, said. Students quickly connected with the space, with tools like Sphero indi cars driving strong engagement. Even first-grade students built coding paths, solved problems, and created structured projects with confidence.
Teachers also increased involvement through hands-on professional development. “It was the most active professional development we ever had,” Pletcher said. The experience drove new ideas across the school as teachers planned ways to bring students into the lab. Today, the new Design and Innovation Studio supports skill-building, exploration, and student confidence, creating consistent opportunities for hands-on learning.
