When you think of a nerd, what comes to mind? Do you think of an awkward kid with glasses or someone who knows every line from the original Star Wars trilogy? There is no strict definition of what a nerd is. The term has shifted in pop culture from an insult to a term of pride. Generally, most people think of a nerd as someone who is deeply interested in a specific subject and desires to learn everything about it.
In STEM education, students who ask questions, test ideas, and stay engaged with STEM topics proudly identify as nerds. Fueling this interest early supports long-term academic success.
Defining “Nerd” vs. “Geek”
People often use these terms interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings. While both describe people with an intense passion for a topic, nerds usually focus on academic subjects like math, science, and engineering; and geeks tend to focus on pop culture and niche hobbies.
If you know someone who can name every element on the periodic table or recite 20 digits of pi, that person fits the definition of a nerd. STEM fields are full of nerds, and this passion keeps our world turning with new discoveries and technologies.
A geek often enjoys media like Star Wars, Harry Potter, or Marvel comics. Watching every movie, reading every book, and knowing every hidden easter egg about a franchise reflects passion and obsession about a subject. While these topics are not academic, many nerds also share these interests. Both nerds and geeks share a strong drive to learn everything about their favorite subject.
Nerdom Exists Everywhere
Being a nerd isn’t limited to STEM, but STEM education can be an opportunity for students to pursue their interests in robotics, coding, or engineering.
A nerd isn’t someone who just sticks to STEM fields, though. There are art, music, history, and even architecture nerds. No matter your interests, you can find a nerdom that shares your focus. The word no longer carries the outdated stigma that being a nerd is something to be ashamed of, so you can take pride in what you enjoy and connect with others.
Celebrate What You Love
Ultimately, the definition of being a nerd or a geek centers on shared interests and connection. Passion drives learning. You can always learn something new every day when you feed your interests, so celebrate being a nerd.
